Thank yous

I’d like to recognize a number of individuals and groups that were a part of RBC Cup week.

Another big thank you to everyone involved in our RBC coverage on CKDM. Mitchell Clinton, Adam Sargent, Christian Laughland and Adam Bernardin; you guys deserve a lot of credit for helping provide the station with wall to wall coverage of the National Junior ‘A’ Championship. All of the announcers at the station (JD Francis, Ryan Schultz, Bruce Leperre, Al Gaines, Chris Jay) as well as the Sales and Management staff (Allan Truman, Hector Paulhus and Cory LaFontaine). Without all of their efforts, the coverage on CKDM just doesn’t happen. Mr. Truman gave me the option of calling all 13 games during the RBC Cup and I’ll always remember that!

My fiance Paige for being there with me and supporting me all the time. She didn’t get to see a lot of me that week, but I’m grateful to have her by my side and know that she loves me no matter what. I love you Paige!

Also Hockey Canada; Jason LaRose, Kevin Webster, and Ashley Archer were all terrific in helping us set up interviews with players, coaches and other personnel during the week. The opportunity to broadcast the games through Fasthockey was one that I’ll never forget; the tech guys were just awesome to work with!

The TSN crew of Dennis Beyak, Craig Button and Shawn Churchill. It was great to touch base again with Beyak as well as meet Button for the first time on Sunday. Watching TSN put on the production of the game and the time they took to talk to the local broadcasters just goes to show how down to earth these guys are. Thanks guys!

I can’t forget the other media personalities that were a part of the RBC Cup; Dallas Hicks and Bill Burfoot of MBC Radio in La Ronge, Todd Miller of the Vernon Vipers, CJOB’s Brian Munz, Jeff Henson of FREE FM in Grand Prairie Alberta. Thanks for working with me and enhancing our coverage on CKDM.

The RBC Cup host committee did a masterful job in putting on one of the most successful National Junior ‘A’ Championships! Also I should recognize the volunteers for all their hours put in during the week.

All five teams (Dauphin, Vernon, Oakville, Brockville and La Ronge). You should be proud of your efforts throughout the entire week and the season as well. Getting to the National Championship is very difficult so I give the teams full credit for putting on a fantastic week!

If I’m forgetting to thank anyone, Thank you for being a part of an event that I will never forget!

Dauphin, Brockville, Vernon, Oakville, La Ronge

These are the five squads that remain out of 144 teams and 11 leagues. Everybody has a shot at the RBC Cup, but experience at the National stage will definitely help. Three of the five teams have played in the RBC Cup before…

VERNON VIPERS (BCHL)

1996 in Melfort, Saskatchewan (2-2 round robin record) 26GF 20 GA

Won the championship game 2-0 over the host Melfort Mustangs (SJHL)

1999 in Yorkton, Saskatchewan (1-3 round robin record) 23GF 20GA

Won the championship game 9-3 over the Charlottetown Abbies

2009 in Victoria, British Columbia (4-0 round robin record) 32GF 15GA

Won the championship game 2-0 over the Humboldt Broncos (SJHL)

OAKVILLE BLADES (OJAHL)

2008 in Cornwall, Ontario (1-3 round robin record) 15GF 21GA

Did not make the semi-finals

BROCKVILLE BRAVES (CJHL)

1998 in Nanaimo, British Columbia (0-4 round robin record) 8GF 23GA

Did not make semi-finals

BOTH THE DAUPHIN KINGS (MJHL) AND LA RONGE ICE WOLVES (SJHL) HAVE NEVER APPEARED IN THE CENTENNIAL CUP OR RBC CUP

Last MJHL club to win the National Title- Selkirk Steelers 1974

Last MJHL team to appear in RBC Cup- Selkirk Steelers 2008 (0-4 in round robin)

SOME FACTS ABOUT THE SQUADS IN THE RBC CUP

- 13 players that played in the RBC Cup with the Vernon Vipers last year are still on the team. In fact Johnathon Milhouse was with the host Victoria Grizzlies last season and is now a member of the Vipers.

- Curtis Gedig of the Vipers is a seventh round selection of the NHL’s New Jersey Devils in last year’s Entry Draft (204th overall).

- Rob Short has played four years with the Vipers and 250+ games with the franchise.

- Goaltender Grahame Gordon (20-year-old) is 1-0 in RBC Cup play as he helped the Vipers defeat the Kingston Voyageurs of the OJAHL 8-5 on the final day of round robin play during last years event. He stopped 16 of 21 shots (5.00 GAA .762 save percentage)

- Vernon Vipers/Lakers last team to win back to back National Championships (1990 and 1991)

- Vernon has ten players with Division 1 NCAA Scholarships

- Brockville Braves won 26 games in a row during the CJHL’s Regular season

- Dauphin Kings set a new franchise record with 50 wins during the regular season. They also won their first Turnbull Cup since 1993 and the ANAVET Cup for the first time in 27 years (1983)

- La Ronge Ice Wolves Captain Dustin Stevenson has a three-year entry-level contract with the NHL’s Washington Capitals.

- Blades forward Ryan Murphy leads Oakville with seven game winning goals.

- Kings forward and ANAVET Cup MVP Mitch Czibere won a Memorial Cup with the Vancouver Giants (WHL) back in 2007. He’s riding a seven game point streak heading into the RBC Cup (3 goals, 8 assists).

CKDM will be all over the RBC Cup with coverage everyday from the event. It’ll include the One Hour Powerplay hosted by Mitchell Clinton following the 1:00 news and sports package. Adam Sargent and I will provide play-by-play of all 13 games during the RBC Cup. Also we will present the pre-game show at 6:30pm.

It should be a lot of fun to cover the event and call games for the station as well as Hockey Canada through FastHockey.

Enjoy the coverage!

Kings help Canadian Cancer Society!

April 29, 2010 Leave a comment

Several Dauphin Kings players will be shaving their heads following the RBC Cup and they’re accepting pledges which will be donated to the Canadian Cancer Society.
The head shave with take place Wednesday May 12th. Defenceman Patrick Kozyra is the one who kick started the idea. Pledges can be made by calling 622-5461.

Shamanski Player of the Year

March 26, 2010 Leave a comment

Dauphin Kings Captain Steven Shamanski is the Manitoba Junior Hockey League’s player of the year.

This honour comes after Shamanski was presented with the Brian Kozak Trophy, awarded to the league’s top defenceman.

Shamanski will now go up against ten other players in the hopes of being named the CJHL’s Player of the Year. Fellow MJHLer Eric Delong of the Portage Terriers won the award last season.

Conclusion or continuation?

Before I get into a preview of tonight’s game, congratulations to Shane Luke and Patrick Kozyra for being named Player and Defenceman of the month respectively.

Luke racked up 5 goals and 22 points in the final month of the MJHL regular season, en route to capturing the Mike Ridley Trophy, awarded to the league’s top point getter.

Kozyra, from Sherwood Park Alberta, had two goals and eight assists last month.

Meanwhile tonight’s fourth game in this Sherwood Division semi-final could spell the end to the Junior Careers of five Neepawa Natives players; Tom Frasz, Jordan Lane, Spencer Hoehn, Caleb Suderman and Wes Pawluk.

Neepawa’s backs are against the wall against the Dauphin Kings, trailing three games to none and outscored 15-3 in the best of seven series thus far. Two of the three Native goals have come on the powerplay so if the Natives are going to pull out a win in Game Four they’ll need even strength goals from their secondary contributors.

If there’s a positive to look at for Neepawa, their penalty kill has been top-notch in this series with just two goals against on seventeen opportunities versus the second best powerplay in the regular season (Dauphin 68/280 24.3%). Matt Krahn is also playing well in this series despite only receiving three goals for support in three games.

Talking to Shane Luke and Patrick Kozyra of the Kings for the pre-game show tonight, they both give credit to the opposition but also admit that the guys are putting in the effort with the mad advantage and results will follow if they stick to basics. Meanwhile Neepawa Head Coach and General Manager Bryant Perrier likes his penalty kill and believes the Natives have it figured out heading into the fourth game.

Dauphin are getting depth scoring as fifteen different players have at least a point in this series. The Kings will look to wrap up the series tonight and avoid playing a fifth game back at Credit Union Place Saturday night.

DAUPHIN KINGS ALL-TIME RECORD

1,721 Games played (964-677-44-26-9)

———————————————————

Onto the second season, This will be the first meeting between the Dauphin Kings and the Neepawa Natives since the 2006/2007 season where the Kings needed six games to knock off the Natives on route to the MJHL final.

The RBC Cup hosts are in search of their first MJHL title since 1993; The Natives, meanwhile are back in the post-season since 2006/2007 when they knocked off the Portage Terriers in the semi-finals before bowing out to the Kings in the division finals.

The Kings finished the regular season with victories in seven of their last nine games, which included a four game winning streak. The Natives also won seven games in ten February contests and reeled off five in a row to wrap up their regular schedule.

The season series, results wise, was dominated by the Kings with seven wins in eight games. Neepawa did salvage their lone win 7-4 against Dauphin in their final head to head meeting at the Yellowhead Arena.

Dauphin features a potent offence with five players finishing with 70 points or more including the top two scorers in the league;  Shane Luke with 29 goals and 101 points and Ryan Dreger with 53 goals and 99 points. Their line mate Bryce Lamb finished the season with 38 goals and 89 points.

The Neepawa Natives top point getter was Wes Pawluk who was fourteenth with 70 points and 27 goals. Dusty Campbell and Tyler Swerdyliak both reached 40 points for the regular season; Campbell had 49 while Swerdyliak got to the 42 point mark.

Back to the Kings, Captain Steven Shamanski won the defensive scoring title with 19 goals and 71 points, which was 29 points better than Swan Valley’s Brent Wilson. Caleb Suderman lead Neepawa’s defence with 15 goals and 36 points, which was tied for ninth among rear guards.

Looking at the numbers, the edge in the battle between the pipes could go to the Kings. When it comes to league rankings, Joe Caligiuri was tied for first in wins with 29 while Matt Krahn of Neepawa was fourth with 22. Caligiuri ranked second in goals against average at 2.59 while Krahn was seventh at 2.85 and in the save percentage category Joe Caligiuri finished at 909 while Krahn had 905.

Meanwhile Kings goaltender Brett Willows had his MJHL list rights with the Neepawa Natives as an 18-year-old before being acquired by Dauphin in a trade, January 2009. Three former members of the Kings now wear Neepawa colours; 20-year-old defenceman Tom Frasz as well as another 20-year-old, forward Jordan Lane. They’re joined by Blair Holmes, who was a Kings prospect.

The venues could be the trump card for this series. Neepawa’s Yellowhead Arena is a smaller ice surface than the Kings are used to with Credit Union Place, which has been known to hamper the Kings in the past. Another factor to consider is Memorial Cup winner Mitch Czibere, who has championship experience back in 2007 with the Vancouver Giants. Czibere scored a hat trick on three separate occasions this year, finishing with 22 goals and 51 points.

SEASON SERIES

DAUPHIN won seven of eight games, outscoring NEEPAWA 47-20

September 18th- Neepawa Natives 2 @ Dauphin Kings 6

September 29th- Dauphin Kings 6 @ Neepawa Natives 4 (KINGS erased 4-2 deficit in third period)

October 24th- Neepawa Natives 1 @ Dauphin Kings 3

October 25th- Dauphin Kings 7 @ Neepawa Natives 4

November 14th- Neepawa Natives 0 @ Dauphin Kings 5 (Brett Willows shut-out)

November 29th- Dauphin Kings 5 @ Neepawa Natives 1

February 3rd- Neepawa Natives 1 @ Dauphin Kings 11

Neepawa Natives @ Dauphin Kings

February 3, 2010 Leave a comment

Before we get to tonight’s match-up a couple of updates on the injury front for the Kings.

Both defenceman Dallas Drysdale and forward Zeanan Ziemer will play tonight against the Neepawa Natives. Ziemer has missed the last ten games with a lower body injury while Drysdale last played January 12th versus Portage; he’s been out with an upper body injury.

With Ziemer and Drysdale back tonight, forwards Troy Hunter and Justin Michaud will both be out of the line-up with day-to-day injuries.

Dale Hunt has left the team due to personal reasons. Marlin Murray is hopeful Hunt will return to the Kings lineup soon.

Tonight’s game between the Kings and Natives will be the seventh time these two teams have met this season. Dauphin has won all six games outscoring Neepawa 32-12.

The Natives beat the Winnipeg Saints last night 5-3 with five different players registering two points in the win (Tyler Swerdyliak, Wes Pawluk, Caleb Suderman, Dusty Campbell and Scott Kirkham).

Here are some other notes to consider…

- Brett Willows will start between the pipes for the Kings in search of win number 19 on the season. His last start came on Friday night in Steinbach with 35 saves in a 5-3 win against the Steinbach Pistons.

- The Kings own a record of 7-4 in 2010 while the Natives are 9-6.

Game time at Credit Union Place will be 7:30pm

Before Friday’s home game against the Steinbach Pistons, I’ll have the Dauphin Kings One Hour Powerplay between 4:00 and 5:00 on CKDM.

The last MJHL on CKDM broadcast of the regular season will happen next Friday, February 12th when the Kings face the Neepawa Natives starting at 7:15 with the pre-game show.
