———————————————————
Onto the second season, This will be the first meeting between the Dauphin Kings and the Neepawa Natives since the 2006/2007 season where the Kings needed six games to knock off the Natives on route to the MJHL final.
The RBC Cup hosts are in search of their first MJHL title since 1993; The Natives, meanwhile are back in the post-season since 2006/2007 when they knocked off the Portage Terriers in the semi-finals before bowing out to the Kings in the division finals.
The Kings finished the regular season with victories in seven of their last nine games, which included a four game winning streak. The Natives also won seven games in ten February contests and reeled off five in a row to wrap up their regular schedule.
The season series, results wise, was dominated by the Kings with seven wins in eight games. Neepawa did salvage their lone win 7-4 against Dauphin in their final head to head meeting at the Yellowhead Arena.
Dauphin features a potent offence with five players finishing with 70 points or more including the top two scorers in the league; Shane Luke with 29 goals and 101 points and Ryan Dreger with 53 goals and 99 points. Their line mate Bryce Lamb finished the season with 38 goals and 89 points.
The Neepawa Natives top point getter was Wes Pawluk who was fourteenth with 70 points and 27 goals. Dusty Campbell and Tyler Swerdyliak both reached 40 points for the regular season; Campbell had 49 while Swerdyliak got to the 42 point mark.
Back to the Kings, Captain Steven Shamanski won the defensive scoring title with 19 goals and 71 points, which was 29 points better than Swan Valley’s Brent Wilson. Caleb Suderman lead Neepawa’s defence with 15 goals and 36 points, which was tied for ninth among rear guards.
Looking at the numbers, the edge in the battle between the pipes could go to the Kings. When it comes to league rankings, Joe Caligiuri was tied for first in wins with 29 while Matt Krahn of Neepawa was fourth with 22. Caligiuri ranked second in goals against average at 2.59 while Krahn was seventh at 2.85 and in the save percentage category Joe Caligiuri finished at 909 while Krahn had 905.
Meanwhile Kings goaltender Brett Willows had his MJHL list rights with the Neepawa Natives as an 18-year-old before being acquired by Dauphin in a trade, January 2009. Three former members of the Kings now wear Neepawa colours; 20-year-old defenceman Tom Frasz as well as another 20-year-old, forward Jordan Lane. They’re joined by Blair Holmes, who was a Kings prospect.
The venues could be the trump card for this series. Neepawa’s Yellowhead Arena is a smaller ice surface than the Kings are used to with Credit Union Place, which has been known to hamper the Kings in the past. Another factor to consider is Memorial Cup winner Mitch Czibere, who has championship experience back in 2007 with the Vancouver Giants. Czibere scored a hat trick on three separate occasions this year, finishing with 22 goals and 51 points.
