This week the Rangers have invited Matt Gamblin to come to camp and try out with the club. This sixteen year old forward played triple ‘A’ hockey in Brandon last year.

Kings and Rangers update

September 10, 2010 Leave a comment

Going into this weekend’s double-header with the SJHL’s Battlefords Northstars, the Dauphin Kings are down to 27 players as they let go forwards Rikki Alston and Matt Yost.

Remember that deal between the Kings and Steinbach Pistons involving Landon Hall? Well initially Hall had some family commitments in Grand Prairie so he wasn’t going to report to the Kings. It turns out that Dauphin did re-acquire Hall and all indications point to him suiting up for the Kings tomorrow night.

Bryn Chyzyk and Mitch Van Teeling are back with Dauphin after trying with Major Junior clubs (Chyzyk Brandon and Van Teeling with Calgary). Goaltender Tyler Oswald is still pushing for a spot with the Saskatoon Blades and Michael Sofillas could make the Lethbridge Hurricanes this season.

It appears as though the Kings will wait until after this weekend’s twin bill with the Northstars to make the final cuts. Murray has indicated that the staff would like to get down to 23 players, however he didn’t rule out the possibility of starting the season with 25.

The Northstars are doing a Manitoba Junior Hockey League weekend themselves. They’ll play Dauphin tonight and tomorrow at Credit Union Place (7:30pm) before finishing with a match-up versus the Wolverines Sunday. I’m looking forward to meeting Northstars play-by-play man Dan O’Connor, who is traveling with the team. He does fantastic work in the SJHL and has always been good to me.

=====================

Between the Kings games, the Midget ‘AAA’ Parkland Rangers have started training camp. Head Coach Bryan Luke is expecting as many as 50 players to start; they are missing six players. Ryan Chartier will miss the first 2-3 months of the season as he’s battling an illness while five others are still at Junior camps…

Derek Falloon and Dylan Neault [MJHL's Dauphin Kings]

Colton Robak [MJHL's Steinbach Pistons]

Ryan Pulock [WHL's Brandon Wheat Kings]

Jayson Argue [MJHL's Swan Valley Stampeders]

The Rangers will have scrimmages all day Saturday before finishing up the weekend with their intra-squad game, Sunday 3:00pm at Credit Union Place.

Selkirk Steelers @ Dauphin Kings

February 19, 2010 Leave a comment

It’s game 61 of the regular season for both the Dauphin Kings and Selkirk Steelers as they’ll meet for the fourth and final time. Dauphin leads the season series 2-1 outscoring Selkirk 15-10.

MJHL Commissioner Kim Davis will be at the game to present league awards, possibly before the puck drop. This could mean a couple of things…

1) Davis will present five members of the Kings with their all-star selection awards. Steven Shamanski, Shane Luke and Ryan Dreger were named to the first squad; Bryce Lamb was selected to the second squad and Mathew Backhouse made the rookie squad.

2) There’s also the possibility that Shamanski could be awarded the league MVP or top defenceman trophy. Shane Luke could also be recognized with the Hockey Ability and Sportsmanship award.

Selkirk’s Taylor Dickin was presented with his first all-star award before last nights game against the Winnipeg South Blues.

With concerns to the game tonight, the Kings come in having won five of seven games this month and will finish first in the Sherwood Division and the League. The Selkirk Steelers are 3-5 this month but will finish second in the Addison Division.

The Steelers snapped a three game losing skid with a 4-3 overtime win against the Blues last night while the Kings have won their last two games.

Tonight also marks the first time that two forwards (Justin Michaud of the Kings and Brendan Baumgartner of the Steelers) will play against their former teams since the December 7th trade.

Some other notes to consider for tonight’s contest…

- The Kings have five players with at least 60 points (Dreger, Luke, Lamb, Ziemer, Shamanski) while the Steelers sport five players in the 50 point club (Dickin, Jackson, Ridgeway, Schappert and Baumgartner)

My thoughts and prayers will be with a young 19 year old goaltender who plays for the Yorkton Terriers of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League. Luke Boechler, was diagnosed with Leukemia late last week, and is beginning treatment in Regina today.

I wish Boechler all the best and a speedy recovery. Big thanks to Craig Stein’s blog for this story.

——————————————

An update on the injury front, forward Ryan Dreger suffered just a charlie horse after the knee on knee hit with Pistons defenceman Connor Sisson on Friday. Head Coach and General Manager Marlin Murray says Dreger is skating and could be back in the line-up either tomorrow against Swan Valley or Friday against Neepawa. The club is relatively healthy with just six games remaining.

Tomorrow’s puck drop will be 7:30pm at Credit Union Place. I’ll post the line-up changes tomorrow as well as the game notes and statistics.

You can catch Friday’s final regular season broadcast from the Yellowhead Arena starting at 7:15

During the intermissions we’ll feature an update on “The Quest for Junior ‘A’ supremacy”. Myself, along with Adam Bernardin and Adam Sargent, take a look across Canada and update you on all eleven leagues.

Thanks for reading!

The DRCSS Clippers will start the Westman High School Hockey League playoffs on the road tomorrow night against the Vincent Massey Vikings in Brandon. Game Two will be in Dauphin Friday night at 7:00.

The Midget ‘AAA’ Parkland Rangers conclude their regular season with two home games; Saturday against the visiting Yellowhead Chiefs and Louis Riel Day Monday versus the Kenora Thistles. The Rangers will match up with either the Central Plains Capitals or the Brandon Wheat Kings in the first round of the post-season.

The Addison Division swing!

Friday night’s contest between the Dauphin Kings and Steinbach Pistons may just seem like another game on the schedule… but not for the Kings!

They’re one win away from tying their franchise record for wins in the regular season with 42. Last year they set the benchmark on the final night of the season, February 22nd, with a 3-1 win over the Wolverines. Should they do it on Friday they’ll accomplish the feat in just 51 games rather than 62.

The Kings also play the Winnipeg Saints Saturday (7:15pm CKDM) and the Winnipeg South Blues Sunday (7:15pm CKDM) to wrap up their final extended road trip of the season.

This weekend will also mark the third time that the Kings will engage in a triple-header. They have a 5-1 combined record in those games outscoring the opposition 26-19. Here are some of the other numbers heading into Friday’s tilt…

KINGS @ STEINBACH FRIDAY 8:00pm

- Dauphin leads the season series with three wins (15GF, 8GA)

September 13th Dauphin 4 @ Steinbach 1

September 27th Steinbach 5 @ Dauphin 4

October 10th Dauphin 6 @ Steinbach 3 (Neutral site WINNIPEG)

SCORING LEADERS HEAD TO HEAD

DAUPHIN KINGS

Steven Shamanski 2G, 6A, 8PTS

Shane Luke 2G, 4A, 6PTS

Ryan Dreger 2G, 3A, 5PTS

Bryce Lamb 2G, 2A, 4PTS

Patrick Kozyra 1G, 2A, 3PTS

STEINBACH PISTONS

Keith Grondin 1G, 2A, 3PTS

Eric Coulombe 3A

Cam Hildebrand 1G, 1A, 2PTS

Colin Reaney 1G, 1A, 2PTS

Mike Gemmell 1G

- This will be F Brett Fargher’s first game against his former team. Fargher had 2 goals and 2 assists in 29 games with the games before being traded initially to the OCN Blizzard back on November 24th. He was traded to Steinbach in a separate deal.

- Ryan Dreger has a twelve game point streak (10G, 11A, 21PTS). He also has seven goals in the last six contests.

- The Kings have a modest two game winning streak (7GF, 1GA)

Game time Friday will be at 8:00. I will try and post the Kings line-up changes and starting goaltender Friday morning.

We’ll have both Winnipeg broadcasts this weekend starting with the pre-game show at 7:15. I’ll be by myself Saturday; Mitchell Clinton will join me for Sunday’s game. On Saturday’s pre-game show we’ll talk to Kings forward Cody Esposito and get a closer look at defenceman Joel Kot; Keith Cassidy, Head Coach of the Saints, will also join us.

During the intermissions this weekend we’ll feature “The Quest for Junior ‘A’ supremacy”. Myself, along with Adam Bernardin and Adam Sargent, take a look across Canada and update you on all eleven leagues.

The Midget AAA Parkland Rangers, fresh off snapping their fourteen game losing skid last Saturday, play two home games Saturday against the Interlake Lightning and Sunday versus the Eastman Selects. Saturday’s game start at 8:00 in Dauphin; Sunday’s game drops the puck at 2:00 in Russell.

Kings deadline moves

January 10, 2010 Leave a comment

The Dauphin Kings added two WHLers; forward Dale Hunt from the Everett Silvertips and defenceman Joel Kot from the Red Deer Rebels.

This season Hunt, who just turned 20, has played 35 games with Everett picking up one goal and two assists for three points and a -2 rating. Kot, last season with the Rebels, suited up in 64 games and compiled two goals and eight assists for ten points to go along with a -7 rating.

They also traded Defenceman Tyson Newell to the Wolverines in exchange for two list players; forward Derek Falloon and defenceman David Heath. The Wolverines then sent Newell along with Wiens to the Melville Millionaires for 1990 goaltender Chris Jackson and 1991 defenceman Bobby Janzen

Newell played just 20 games with the Kings with one goal and one assist. Falloon is playing with the Midget AAA Parkland Rangers and has 13 goals and 12 assists for 25 points this season.

Two top MJHL teams are in Parkland!

December 9, 2009 Leave a comment

The best two teams right now in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League will hit the Credit Union Place ice tonight.

The 31-5-1-0 Dauphin Kings host their Parkland rivals, the 23-12-1-1 Swan Valley Stampeders. Looking at the standings the Kings have 63 points while the Stampeders have 48 points; Swan Valley leads the season series 2-1 however all three games have come at the Centennial Arena in Swan River.

The Stampeders will be a good opponent for the Kings as Swan Valley knocked off the Wolverines 5-3 last night; Dauphin will look to extend their seventeen game winning streak at Credit Union Place tonight (their only loss as the home team came back at the Showcase Weekend in Winnipeg when the Flyers skated by the Kings 3-2 in overtime).

Dauphin had a second period let down Saturday versus the OCN Blizzard as Scott McMillian’s boys scored three goals in a 2:25 span to beat the Kings 5-3 and send Dauphin home with a weekend split. In fact the Blizzard picked up three points in the standings while the Kings had just two.

Some other notes to consider for tonight’s game…

- In the last three seasons the Kings have a 12-0 record on home ice against the Stampeders.

- The last time Dauphin suffered a loss on home ice was February 3rd of last season when the Wolverines knocked off the Kings 3-2.

- Tonight will be Marlin Murray’s 200th regular season game behind the bench. He has a 129-60-6-4 for 269 points and a winning percentage of .648.

- The Stampeders have a five game winning streak coming into this game (20 GF 13 GA).

- Defenceman Tyler Gaudry will be the lone scratch for the game which forward Travis Cech is back in the line-up after sitting out the weekend in The Pas with a lower body injury.

After tonight’s game the Kings will head to Winnipeg to face former King Stu Durston and the South Blues tomorrow and then it’s off to the University of North Dakota for the weekend. The trip will conclude with a stop at the Recreation Complex in Winkler to battle the Flyers. Mitchell Clinton and I will have all the action starting with the pre-game show at 7:15pm.

=======================

The DRCSS Clippers resume their regular season schedule Friday as the Glenboro/Carberry Wildcats skate into Credit Union Place. Puck drop will be at 8:00.

The Midget AAA Parkland Rangers head back out on the road this weekend to take on the Southwest Cougars Saturday night in Boissevain and the Pembina Valley Hawks Sunday afternoon in Pilot Mound.

Lawrence dealt; Willows, Dreger honoured

December 1, 2009 Leave a comment

Calgary product David Lawrence was a member of the Dauphin Kings for a short time as the Junior ‘A’ club continues to tweak their roster.

He’s off to the Battlefords North Stars of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League for future considerations. Lawrence only had four assists in his eleven games in a Kings uniform. In the MJHL this season Lawrence collected two goals and six assists for eight points with Dauphin, OCN and Winkler.

Lawrence was thought to be the line-mate for Zeanan Buternowski when he became a King last week but that only lasted one game as Lawrence was a healthy scratch in Sunday’s 5-1 win over the Neepawa Natives.

With this trade the Kings are down to nine twenty year olds on their current roster…

G Joe Caligiuri

F Zeanan Buternowski

F Bryce Lamb

F Cody Esposito

F Mitch Czibere

D Steven Shamanski

F Ryan Dreger

D Patrick Kozyra

F Brendan Baumgartner

Also with the January 10th trading deadline on the way the Kings want to get down to 25 Junior ‘A’ cards in order to acquire a few more pieces to the puzzle before the playoffs.

—————————

Congratulations to Ryan Dreger, Brett Willows and Steven Shamanski on being recognized by the Manitoba Junior Hockey League for their November efforts.

Ryan Dreger is the Player of the Month with 15 goals and 26 points in 13 games played in November.

Meanwhile Willows earns the Goaltender of the Month honours with five victories, a 2.33 GAA and .916 save percentage.

Shamanski was a runner-up for the defenceman of the month honours to Brent Wilson of the Swan Valley Stampeders.

The remainder of the 2009 schedule for the Kings looks like this…

WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 2nd @ Waywayseecappo Wolverines

FRIDAY DECEMBER 4th @ OCN Blizzard (6:45pm CKDM)

SATURDAY DECEMBER 5th @ OCN Blizzard (6:45pm CKDM)

WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 9th vs. Swan Valley Stampeders

THURSDAY DECEMBER 10th @ Winnipeg South Blues

SUNDAY DECEMBER 13th @ Winkler Flyers (7:15pm CKDM)

THURSDAY DECEMBER 17th @ Portage Terriers (7:15pm CKDM)

FRIDAY DECEMBER 18th vs. Portage Terriers (POWERPLAY SHOW)

I’m looking forward to the final trip up to The Pas this weekend. Zeana Buternowski plays his first game at the Gordon Lathlin Memorial Centre as a member of the opposition.

The Midget AAA Parkland Rangers will be a frustrated team tomorrow night as they are on the road for a 7:15pm game with the Brandon Midget Wheat Kings. The Rangers are coming off a lopsided 9-1 loss at the hands of the Winnipeg Wild.

The DRCSS Clippers are 3-3 in the Westman High School Hockey League regular season. The weekend will see the Clippers head to Brandon for the Genesis tournament. I’ll post a schedule later this week.

Ziemer debuts Paull returns!

November 27, 2009 Leave a comment

A familiar face is back with the Dauphin Kings.

19-year-old Elkhorn defenceman Colin Paull is re-acquired from the Winkler Flyers in exchange for future considerations. Looking at this deal the Kings not only get Paull back but they also snag forward David Lawrence and a seventh round pick from the Flyers.

Paull has appeared in 22 games with the Kings this season picking up three assists. I like this move because Paull is not necessarily a big point producer but he is a shut down guy, very sound defensively.

With the re-acquisition of Paull the Kings have a crowded blue-line with eight players…

Steven Shamanski (20)

Colin Paull (19)

Tyler Gaudry (18)

Mathew Backhouse (18)

Patrick Kozyra (20)

Mike Boese (19)

Dallas Drsydale (18)

Tyson Newell (18)

The good news is that should this club run into injury problems they now have reserves ready to take a spot in the line-up. We’ll have to wait and see if Paull will play tomorrow against the Portage Terriers.

One guy who will play against the Terriers will be Zeanan Ziemer (a.k.a. Zeanan Buternowski). This is a special player and can make anything happen by himself on the ice; watching him last year alongside David Lawrence and Jordan Sinclair in the Sherwood Division semi-final really makes me look forward to tomorrow night. Lawrence told me that he and Ziemer will get a chance to skate on the same line again with the Kings, only this time it won’t be the top line. Like I’ve said before with the production that Lamb Luke and Dreger have this season how can they be taken off the first line?

Tomorrow will also be meeting number four between the Kings and Terriers. Here are some notes to consider…

- Dauphin holds a 3-0 lead in the season series, which includes a 2-1 victory at Credit Union Place November 13th.

The Kings pit their sixteen game winning streak on the line at Credit Union Place  against the Terriers, who hold a road record of 8-4-1-1.

- Kings forward Cody Esposito has three goals in his last two games.

- Shane Luke, Ryan Dreger and Bryce Lamb continue to be 1-2-3 in MJHL scoring so far this season. Luke leads the way with 58 points, while Dreger and Lamb sit tied in second spot with 55 points.

- Tyler Moore leads the Terriers in point scoring this season with 13 goals and 20 assists for 33 points.

Both teams might be in sour moods heading into this game. The Kings fell to the Swan Valley Stampeders for the second time in a week by a score of 5-2 Wednesday in Swan River.  Ironically enough the Stampeders knocked off the Terriers 7-6 in a shootout last night. Puck drop will be at 7:30 Saturday night!

Meanwhile Sunday afternoon the Kings will look to snap their two game losing skid on the road as they have a Grey Cup Sunday matinée with the Neepawa Natives in the cozy confines of the Yellowhead Arena. Terry Murray and I will have all the action starting with the pre-game show at 1:45, puck drop will be at 2:00.

=================================

Also on Sunday afternoon the Midget AAA Parkland Rangers welcome the Winnipeg Wild to Credit Union Place looking to erase the memories of a 7-1 defeat Wednesday at the hands of the Southwest Cougars. Game time will be 2:00.

The DRCSS Clippers are taking on the Vincent Massey Vikings tonight at Credit Union Place. Tomorrow at 4:00pm the Minnedosa Chancellors come to town to take on the Clippers.

Kings @ Stampeders round three

November 25, 2009 Leave a comment

The Kings will be the first to admit that last Wednesday’s 7-4 loss to the Swan Valley Stampeders was not their best effort. The game was tied 1-1 after the first period on goals by Myles Stevens  and Ryan Dreger; after that the Stampeders took advantage of their opportunities.

They collected seven goals on 24 shots, including two on the powerplay and one short-handed. When it was all said and done Ryan Marshall and Darcy Riddell each had four points, Myles Stevens had three while Chris Reimer, Shelby Gray and Carter Selinger all had two points in the Stamps win.

Tonight is a new game as the Stamps look to hand the Kings just their fourth loss of the season. Some other notes to consider…

- The Kings top line of Bryce Lamb, Shane Luke and Ryan Dreger have combined for 22 goals and 40 assists in ten games during November.

- Shane Luke has 8 assists in his last five games

The Kings will have just two scratches for tonight’s game. Forward Zeanan Ziemer will make his Dauphin debut Saturday night while Defenceman Tyson Newell has a one game suspension. Brett Willows will start his fourth straight game between the pipes; he has a 1.66 goals against average and a .945 save percentage during that stretch. He even had a shutout back on November 14th versus the Neepawa Natives. Joe Caligiuri will back-up Willows after sitting out last nights game with the flu.

I’ll have the broadcast starting with the pre-game show at 7:15pm. During the intermissions we’ll feature Kings forwards David Lawrence and Travis Cech. Enjoy the game!

Meanwhile the Midget AAA Parkland Rangers are in search of their third straight win against the Southwest Cougars. The Rangers swept their weekend double-header against the Norman Northstars and are back at Credit Union Place. Puck drop in that game will be at 7:30.
