The Dauphin Kings will try and salvage their first points against the Swan Valley Stampeders this regular season. The Kings got off to a strong start last night on home ice and even scored on their third shot of the game, as Jeff Archibald was able to beat Stampeders goaltender Jason Argue to make it 1-0. After that it was all Swan Valley as the Stampeders were able to get shots through the Kings defence, and even jumped on several rebounds making Brett Willows evening less than enjoyable. Despite a third period powerplay goal by Kyle Krzyzaniak, Dauphin dropped their fifth game in a row at Credit Union Place by a score of 4-2.

This month the Kings sport a record of 4-3 on the road; the Stampeders are 4-1-1 at the Centennial Arena. Marlin Murray returns behind the bench this evening after serving a two game suspension.

The only meeting in Swan River this regular season ended in a 3-1 Stampeders win back on October 2nd. The Kings outshot Swan Valley 33-32 by only managed a late third period powerplay goal courtesy of Shane Luke. The Stampeders goals came from Tyler O’Connor, Dylan Reimer and Clark Byczynski short-handed. The goaltending match-up between Dylan Wells and Brett Willows was great to watch as Wells stopped 32 shots for the victory and Willows made 29 saves for the loss.

The Dauphin Kings will look to continue their streak of nine straight games with at least one powerplay goal.

Looking at the Sherwood Division, the Kings are fifth with 9 wins and 20 points. The Neepawa Natives are one point ahead of the Kings for fourth spot thanks to a 6-1 drubbing of the Winnipeg Blues last night. Neepawa is the hottest team in the MJHL right with six straight wins heading into tonight’s tilt with the Steinbach Pistons.

The Swan Valley Stampeders continue to lead the Division with 12 wins and 25 points. Five points separate first place Swan Valley, second place Portage, third place OCN, fourth place Neepawa and and fifth place Dauphin.

Bryn Chyzyk is the Player of the Week

Dauphin Kings rookie forward Bryn Chyzyk is the MJHL’s Player of the Week.

Chyzyk collected three goals and six points in four games with the Kings, who managed a 2-2 record last week. He sits tied for first in the rookie scoring race with eight goals and twenty one points.

The Runners-up for the award were Evan Gravenor of the Winnipeg Blues and Winnipeg Saints Captain Cole Pruden.

Dauphin Kings @ Selkirk Steelers October 24th

DAUPHIN KINGS (8-7-2-0) 18 Points 4th in the Sherwood Division

SELKIRK STEELERS (10-3-0-3) 23 Points 1st in the Addison Division

The Dauphin Kings effort last night in St. Adolphe was good to start as they managed to get the 3-1 lead early in the second period, score on their third powerplay of the game and shut down a Saints 5 on 3 opportunity in the first period of play but after Colton Graf’s second period goal it was a much different story. The Saints big guns of Cole Pruden, Brett Chartier and Jordan Davies made their presence felt as the Saints would score six in a row, including three on the powerplay in a 7-4 win. Pruden had three goals and two assists, Chartier was credited with a goal and five helpers while Davies had two points. Richard Little had helpers on three Winnipeg goals.

The Saints are now 9-4-1 since defeating the Dauphin Kings in St. Adolphe on September 24th. Marlin Murray’s crew might be happy to be done with that location for the regular season as they were outscored 12-4 in two games. The Kings and Saints will have their final regular season match-up on Friday December 4th in Dauphin.

Tonight’s affair presents a much different challenge as the Selkirk Steelers have collected points in the standings in eight straight outings. They split a home and home series with the Winkler Flyers; winning Friday 7-2 in Selkirk before losing 4-3 in a shootout last night in Winkler. The Steelers lead the Addison Division with 10 wins and 23 points, Winkler and the Winnipeg Saints are tied for second with 19 points each.

What about the status of Brett Willows and Marlin Murray for tonight’s game? Willows received a game and gross misconduct just 41 seconds into the third period of last night’s loss while Murray was tossed out by referees Graham Heather and Ryan Hawthorn. If Willows is unable to play, Ryan Bembridge will get the call for the second straight game. His performance against the Saints was pretty good; there were a few goals I’m sure he’d like to have back but for the most part he’s a pretty good back-up to Brett Willows.

The Dauphin Kings occupy fourth spot in the Sherwood Division with eight wins and 18 points. The Neepawa Natives, who welcome the OCN Blizzard to the Yellowhead Arena tonight, are just three points back of the Kings in the standings.

Dauphin Kings @ Winnipeg Saints October 23

WINNIPEG SAINTS (8-8-1-0) 17 Points T-2nd in the Addison Division

The Dauphin Kings will look for their third straight road victory tonight in St. Adolphe against the Winnipeg Saints, who turned their season around after shutting out the Kings 5-0 back on September 24th.

Going into that game the Saints had a 0-4 record; since that Friday night win the Saints have a record of 8-4-1 and have seventeen points. They did collect a single point in last night’s 1-0 overtime loss to the OCN Blizzard and are tied with the Winkler Flyers for second place in the Addison Division.

The Dauphin Kings remain two points back of the Portage Terriers for third in the Sherwood Division. The Terriers are also in action this evening with the OCN Blizzard invading the PCU Centre.

In October the Dauphin Kings are 3-2 away from Credit Union Place while the Winnipeg Saints sport a record of 1-2-1 in St. Adolphe.

When it comes to the lineups, Saints Head Coach and David Anning says that Goaltender Michael Deslauriers, defencemen Dylan Pascoe and Kael Peterson along with forwards Kevin Trapmore and Chris Popel will not dress for Winnipeg. Brent Wolfe, who stopped 21 of 22 Blizzard shots last night, will be back between the pipes this eveing.

The Kings lineup is a game time decision as an e-mail this morning to Kings Head Coach and General Manager Marlin Murray was not immediately returned.

Dauphin Kings @ Steinbach Pistons October 22

DAUPHIN KINGS (7-6-2-0) 16 Points 4th in the Sherwood Division

STEINBACH PISTONS (4-8-2-0) 10 Points 5th in the Addison Division

Tonight marks the first of four head to head match-ups between the Dauphin Kings and Steinbach Pistons.

Last year, the Kings won all five meetings with the Pistons and outscored them 33-11 in the process.

Coming into tonight’s match-up the Pistons are two points back of the idle Winnipeg Blues for fourth place in the Addison Division. The Kings are a win away from tying Portage for third in the Sherwood Division. The Terriers welcome the Swan Valley Stampeders.

In October the Dauphin Kings are 2-2 away from Credit Union Place while the Steinbach Pistons sport a record of 1-2 at the TG Smith Arena.

The Pistons are winless in their last three games, and have been outscored 14-10. The Kings will try to turn their recent fortunes around as they’ve lost three of their last four games.

When it comes to the lineups, Pistons Head Coach Rich Gosselin says there are a few game time decisions to make which includes whether defenceman Connor Sisson will play against the Kings. Speaking of Dauphin they will scratch Eddie Friesen, Angus Klassen and Jeff Archibald. Defenceman Brendan Kotyk, who came over in a trade with the SJHL’s Humboldt Broncos, will play his second game with Dauphin wearing number 13.

The goaltending match-up will be Brett Willows of the Kings versus Addison Herosian of the Pistons.

Kings and Flyers lineup changes

The Dauphin Kings will be without Matt McAleenan, Eddie Friesen, Angus Klassen and Colton Graf for the Winkler match-up this evening.

One notable change in the lineup includes Travis Cech being replaced by Brenden Kotyk. Cech is no longer with Dauphin while Kotyk will be a healthy scratch for this evening. In eight games with the SJHL’s Humboldt Broncos the 1991 born defenceman has four goals and 16 penlty minutes. Wearing sweater 13 for the Kings will be high school call up Dylan Neault.

The Flyers will scratch Sam Benson, Cameron Carns, Jeff Clark and Taylor Wells.

The goaltending match-up will be Brett Willows for the Kings against Reed Peters of the Flyers.

The two referee system

The Manitoba Junior Hockey League Board of Governors approved a number of items during their annual general meeting back in June, which included the two referee system. In total 100 out of 330 league games will be assigned using two referees and two linesmen.

Personally I like this idea and think it’s gone really well so far. With two officials on the ice, the second set of eyes can catch infractions that perhaps aren’t called  by the referee that’s right in the play. There are times as well when plays are missed but there is a human element to refereeing. I applaud the MJHL and it’s Board of Governors for taking this step and joining other leagues in implementing the two referee system. The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League is in the process of putting two referees and two linesman in every regular season game and several pro leagues already use it full time. Anything that can be done to make officials jobs easier I’m always in favour of.

The changes to the roster the Kings have made to this date have been fast and furious. The recent additions of Matt McAleenan and Kyle Krzyzaniak have been great so far while Josh Daley, Dayton Shaw and Quentin Holmes have all been able to contribute offensively for a Dauphin squad that lacked secondary scoring. What about Ryan Bembridge? He’s only had one start with his new team, which was a 5-2 loss to the Portage Terriers on October 10th. Bembridge did stop 28 shots in that game, but until he gets more playing time it’s difficult to gage the effectiveness of the move. Leo Podolsky was a more than capable back up to Brett Willows, but wanted more games than the Kings were willing to promise him. Either way I’m curious to see how this team will mold together; then again the MJHL trading deadlin is still three months away so there could be more new faces in the room.

WINKLER FLYERS (7-5-1-0) 15 Points 3rd in the Addison Division

DAUPHIN KINGS (7-5-2-0) 16 Points T-3rd in the Sherwood Division

The Dauphin Kings and Winkler Flyers will meet for the first time this regular season. These clubs will play four times total; two in Dauphin and two in Winkler.

When the Kings meet an opponent for the first time I like to reference their head to head records dating back to the 2006/2007 season. When it comes to the Flyers and Kings, Dauphin owns a record of 5-4-1-0 at Credit Union Place the last four seasons while in Winkler the Kings have a record of 4-4-0-0 at the Recreation Complex.

Dauphin forward Dayton Shaw will look to extend his current point scoring streak to three games. He has three points in his last two outings.

The Flyers have lost their last three games, and have been outscored 13-6. The Kings will try to snap their three game losing skid at Credit Union Place tonight.

Puck drop between Winkler and Dauphin will be 7:00 inside Credit Union Place.

Kings sweep Showcase Weekend; Luke questionable for Sunday

Despite missing five players, the Dauphin Kings win both of their Showcase games at the MTS Iceplex. Chris Daniels collects two goals, including one on the powerplay, while Bryn Chyzyk also converts on special teams in the Kings 5-4 shootout win versus the Winnipeg Blues. This triumph follows Friday night’s 5-2 win over the Selkirk Steelers.

Chyzyk had two points overall for Dauphin, who improve their record to 6-4-1 following Saturday’s result.

The Blues were led offensively by Evan Gravenor with two goals; Channing Bresianni and Jeff Borse also found the back of the net for Winnipeg, who drop to 2-5-2-3 overall.

After the game, Murray was impressed with the way his players competed despite all the missing bodies. The scratched players tonight were Matt Backhouse, Eddie Friesen, Angus Klassen, Jeff Archibald and Colton Graf.

Captain Shane Luke is questionable for Sunday’s game against the Portage Terriers as he has a bruised shoulder following a hit at the conclusion of the first period. Murray told me that Luke would be re-evaluated on Sunday.

Meanwhile Colin Paull is no longer with the Kings. Marlin Murray said that Paull has stepped away from the game and has returned home to Elkhorn to see if he can get the desire back to play. Murray added that Paull didn’t like being at the rink and didn’t have any motivation to be on the ice. The Kings don’t expect Paull to return but he will be kept on their list should he change his mind.

We’ll have tomorrow’s game between the Dauphin Kings and Portage Terriers on CKDM starting with the pre-game show at 6:15.

Kings and Stars trade

The Dauphin Kings trade forwards Keith Grondin (20) and Brandon Esposito (18) to the SJHL’s Battlefords Northstars in exchange for forward Josh Daley (20).

In six games with the Stars this season Daley has three assists.

Grondin played in all nine games with the Kings picking up one assist while Esposito did not play in one game for Dauphin.

On the injury front for the Kings, forward Colton Graf is awaiting the results of an MRI to determine the severity of his injury suffered on Friday versus the Winnipeg Blues.

The Dauphin Clippers hockey team have two confirmed exhibition games with the Neepawa Tigers. The first one will go Saturday October 16th at 7:30 inside Credit Union Place and the rematch will be Tuesday October 19th starting at 7:00pm in Neepawa.

Weekend Road Trip- Saturday

The day for yours truly started at 10:30am as I was updating the blog as well as my statistics for tonight’s game against the Blues. The Kings only managed sixteen shots versus the Saints the night before so I was expecting Dauphin to be much better tonight.

My wife and I did some more running around early in the day before coming home around 2:30pm so I could finish my prep and get ready for the second broadcast of the season. I was able to get a lot more done today and feel very good heading to the rink.

After wrapping up my work and packing my equipment up, I got dressed and left for the MTS Iceplex just after 5:00. The entrance to the Iceplex is a little hidden, but once you see the outside of the brand new building it’s not so bad. The Iceplex is breathtaking; the technology in the building is just amazing and the broadcast location is the best non-booth in the MJHL.

After arriving at the rink at 6:00, I found Kings Head Coach and General Manager Marlin Murray. He was in a pretty good mood heading into the game and wanted to forget about last night’s contest. I got the scratches for the Kings as well as the pre-game interview then it was off to find Don MacGillivray. Once I caught up with MacGillivray I was able to interview him for the show as well as get his scratches for the game. Jason Gardiner had five goals coming into tonight’s contest,  according to MacGillivray Gardiner takes lots of shots and doesn’t take a lot of time with the puck. This was almost the perfect game because both teams were shutout in their previous outings so you know the scoring was going to happen early and often.

After talking to the coaches, I went inside the rink to set-up our equipment. I was very impressed with the sightlines of the Iceplex; the acoustics in the arena aren’t the greatest but other than that a flawless building. My colour man Mitchell Clinton arrived just before 7:00 and we were ready to get the broadcast on the air at 7:15.

The Kings lead 2-0 after the first period and were outshooting the Blues 10-6. Angus Klassen scored both goals and finished the night with his first career hat trick, congrats Angus.

The second period was the Blues period. They outshot the Kings 14-5 and chased Dauphin starting goaltender Leo Podolsky from the net; he only gave up three goals on seventeen shots but the third one was an Adam Stoykewych wrist shot that found its way through Podolsky’s legs. There were three powerplay goals scored in the middle frame as Dauphin carried a 4-3 advantage heading to the third period.

Just one goal scored in the third period, as the Winnipeg Blues continued their push to tie the game and salvage another point in the standings. Conor Stephanson banged home a loose puck in the crease to tie the contest at four. Both clubs had excellent opportunities in the third period and overtime to try and win the game but this one would need a shootout. Winnipeg outshot Dauphin 13-7 in the third period and 3-2 in overtime.

In the shootout Shane Luke and Jeremy Peeke scored for the Kings while Connor Cleverley was able to beat Dauphin netminder Brett Willows for the lone Blues marker. Dauphin wins the game 5-4 in the shootout, leaving Winnipeg still without a win on the season.

Mitch and I concluded out post-game show around 10:30 and headed home. Overall a good broadcast on all accounts; I loved calling a game in the MTS Iceplex. It’s a shame the Kings and Blues don’t play more often.

On my way home I stopped for a post-game meal and then settled in for the night. Another hectic day expected for Sunday as we pack up and head to Portage and see the new PCU Arena. I also pick up Christian Laughland from the airport; he’s been away for the past week and will join me for colour commentary against the Terriers.
