Kings and Clippers notes Oct 14th

October 14, 2010 Leave a comment

The Brandon Wheat Kings designate defenceman Kyle Krzyzaniak to the Dauphin Kings for assignment. Kings Head Coach and General Manager Marlin Murray anticipates having Krzyzaniak for the remainder of the season, but there’s the possibility that he could go back up to the WHL. The Wheat Kings have dealt Krzyzaniak to the Spokane Chiefs for a 12th round pick in the 2011 Bantam Draft. Also Krzyzaniak’s Junior ‘A’ rights belong to the SJHL’s Humboldt Broncos, but reports indicate that the Kings are working on acquiring them.

The Dauphin Kings alsodeal 20 year old defenceman Colin Paull and future considerations to the Flin Flon Bombers of the SJHL for 19 year old defenceman Matt McAleenan and 19 year old forward Alex Serafini. Murray notes other pieces, such as Serafini, were included in the trade just so the future considerations part of the deal could clear through without waiting 48 hours. McAleenan will make his Kings debut tomorrow versus Portage.

Kings lineup versus Neepawa Natives

September 21, 2010 3 comments

The Dauphin Kings, who are 2-0 to start the MJHL season, will welcome back Brett Willows and Colin Paull to the line-up tonight. Willows makes his first start of the campaign fresh off a three game suspension while Paull returns from an injury.

The Kings will scratch Jacob Harcoff, Tanner Butler, Jeff Archibald and Brandon Esposito. Esposito was added to the roster and skated with the Kings on Monday; Head Coach and General Manager Marlin Murray is holding Esposito out of the line-up until he gets used to the teams systems. Brandon is the younger brother of ex-King Cody Esposito.

To make room for Esposito the Kings re-assign forward Dylan Neault to the Dauphin Clippers of the Westman High School Hockey League.

The Neepawa Natives come into tonight’s affair with a 1-1 record. Puck drop at Credit Union Place is 7:00.

After tonight the Kings will embark on a weekend road trip through Winnipeg and Portage. They’ll face off with the Saints Friday in St. Adolphe, the Blues in Headingley at the brand new MTS Iceplex and the Terriers Sunday at the PCU Centre. All three games will be on CKDM; Friday and Saturday’s coverage will start at 7:15 while Sunday’s pre-game show gets underway at 6:15.

I’ll be blogging my daily routine all three days this weekend. I did one of these before and really loved putting it together. I’ll be sure to get photos of the new buildings for the Saints, Blues and Terriers.

Selkirk Steelers @ Dauphin Kings

February 19, 2010 Leave a comment

It’s game 61 of the regular season for both the Dauphin Kings and Selkirk Steelers as they’ll meet for the fourth and final time. Dauphin leads the season series 2-1 outscoring Selkirk 15-10.

MJHL Commissioner Kim Davis will be at the game to present league awards, possibly before the puck drop. This could mean a couple of things…

1) Davis will present five members of the Kings with their all-star selection awards. Steven Shamanski, Shane Luke and Ryan Dreger were named to the first squad; Bryce Lamb was selected to the second squad and Mathew Backhouse made the rookie squad.

2) There’s also the possibility that Shamanski could be awarded the league MVP or top defenceman trophy. Shane Luke could also be recognized with the Hockey Ability and Sportsmanship award.

Selkirk’s Taylor Dickin was presented with his first all-star award before last nights game against the Winnipeg South Blues.

With concerns to the game tonight, the Kings come in having won five of seven games this month and will finish first in the Sherwood Division and the League. The Selkirk Steelers are 3-5 this month but will finish second in the Addison Division.

The Steelers snapped a three game losing skid with a 4-3 overtime win against the Blues last night while the Kings have won their last two games.

Tonight also marks the first time that two forwards (Justin Michaud of the Kings and Brendan Baumgartner of the Steelers) will play against their former teams since the December 7th trade.

Some other notes to consider for tonight’s contest…

- The Kings have five players with at least 60 points (Dreger, Luke, Lamb, Ziemer, Shamanski) while the Steelers sport five players in the 50 point club (Dickin, Jackson, Ridgeway, Schappert and Baumgartner)

The final home stand!

February 16, 2010 Leave a comment

Both the OCN Blizzard and Dauphin Kings have played 59 games heading into tonight’s final head to head meeting of the regular season.

Despite the fact the Kings are still gunning for 50 wins, tonight’s contest doesn’t mean nearly as much to them as it does to the OCN Blizzard.

The Blizzard are running out of games to catch the Winnipeg South Blues who hold the  final playoff spot in the Addison Division. OCN has to finish the regular season with more points than the Blues in order to cross over and match up with, most likely, the Winnipeg Saints in the first round of the playoffs. The Blues have also played 59 games and are in action against the Selkirk Steelers tonight.

Both the Blizzard and Kings played on the holiday Monday; The Kings beat the Wolverines 5-3 with only sixteen skaters dressed. The Blizzard played in the afternoon and lost 3-2 to the Stampeders, however because of bus problems the team didn’t get to their hotel until 2am.

The Kings have the edge in the season series with five victories in seven games, including a perfect 3-0 mark on home ice. Dauphin has outscored OCN 24-17.

Zeanan Ziemer could be a factor in tonight’s game as he has six goals and ten assists this month, including nine helpers in his last six outings. Here are some other Kings players and their numbers in February (6 games) …

Shane Luke 3G, 12A

Devin Mitzner 6G, 6A

Mitch Czibere 5G, 6A

Bryce Lamb 5G, 6A

Ryan Dreger 6G, 3A (5 games)

Steven Shamanski 2G, 6A

HEAD TO HEAD STATS

DAUPHIN KINGS

Cody Esposito 6 games (6G, 4A, 10PTS)

Steven Shamanski 7 games (3G, 4A, 7PTS)

Ryan Dreger 7 games (4G, 2A, 6PTS)

Bryce Lamb 7 games (3G, 3A, 6PTS)

Mike Boese and Shane Luke 7 games (6A)

Joe Caligiuri 5 games (4-1) 2.16 GAA .918 SV PCT

Brett Willows 2 games (1-1) 3.00 GAA .895 SV PCT

OCN BLIZZARD

TJ Constant 7 games (2G, 3A, 5PTS)

JB Voyer 7 games (1G, 3A, 4PTS)

Kory Kimpinski 6 games (3G, 1A, 4PTS)

Jordan Hebert 7 games (3G, 1A, 4PTS)

Brock Friesen 6 games (2G, 1A, 3PTS)

David Aime 6 games (2-4) 3.04 GAA .923 SV PCT

Garrett Barr 2 games (0-1) 3.48 GAA .897 SV PCT

The goaltending match-up will be David Aime versus Brett Willows. The Blizzard have one scratch which will be a game time decision; the Kings will not have Justin Michaud, Angus Klassen, Cody Esposito and Troy Hunter in the line-up.

Enjoy the game!

My thoughts and prayers will be with a young 19 year old goaltender who plays for the Yorkton Terriers of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League. Luke Boechler, was diagnosed with Leukemia late last week, and is beginning treatment in Regina today.

I wish Boechler all the best and a speedy recovery. Big thanks to Craig Stein’s blog for this story.

An update on the injury front, forward Ryan Dreger suffered just a charlie horse after the knee on knee hit with Pistons defenceman Connor Sisson on Friday. Head Coach and General Manager Marlin Murray says Dreger is skating and could be back in the line-up either tomorrow against Swan Valley or Friday against Neepawa. The club is relatively healthy with just six games remaining.

Tomorrow’s puck drop will be 7:30pm at Credit Union Place. I’ll post the line-up changes tomorrow as well as the game notes and statistics.

You can catch Friday’s final regular season broadcast from the Yellowhead Arena starting at 7:15

During the intermissions we’ll feature an update on “The Quest for Junior ‘A’ supremacy”. Myself, along with Adam Bernardin and Adam Sargent, take a look across Canada and update you on all eleven leagues.

The Addison Division swing!

January 28, 2010 Leave a comment

Friday night’s contest between the Dauphin Kings and Steinbach Pistons may just seem like another game on the schedule… but not for the Kings!

They’re one win away from tying their franchise record for wins in the regular season with 42. Last year they set the benchmark on the final night of the season, February 22nd, with a 3-1 win over the Wolverines. Should they do it on Friday they’ll accomplish the feat in just 51 games rather than 62.

The Kings also play the Winnipeg Saints Saturday (7:15pm CKDM) and the Winnipeg South Blues Sunday (7:15pm CKDM) to wrap up their final extended road trip of the season.

This weekend will also mark the third time that the Kings will engage in a triple-header. They have a 5-1 combined record in those games outscoring the opposition 26-19. Here are some of the other numbers heading into Friday’s tilt…

KINGS @ STEINBACH FRIDAY 8:00pm

- Dauphin leads the season series with three wins (15GF, 8GA)

September 13th Dauphin 4 @ Steinbach 1

September 27th Steinbach 5 @ Dauphin 4

October 10th Dauphin 6 @ Steinbach 3 (Neutral site WINNIPEG)

SCORING LEADERS HEAD TO HEAD

DAUPHIN KINGS

Steven Shamanski 2G, 6A, 8PTS

Shane Luke 2G, 4A, 6PTS

Eric Coulombe 3A

Cam Hildebrand 1G, 1A, 2PTS

Colin Reaney 1G, 1A, 2PTS

Mike Gemmell 1G

- This will be F Brett Fargher’s first game against his former team. Fargher had 2 goals and 2 assists in 29 games with the games before being traded initially to the OCN Blizzard back on November 24th. He was traded to Steinbach in a separate deal.

- Ryan Dreger has a twelve game point streak (10G, 11A, 21PTS). He also has seven goals in the last six contests.

- The Kings have a modest two game winning streak (7GF, 1GA)

Game time Friday will be at 8:00. I will try and post the Kings line-up changes and starting goaltender Friday morning.

We’ll have both Winnipeg broadcasts this weekend starting with the pre-game show at 7:15. I’ll be by myself Saturday; Mitchell Clinton will join me for Sunday’s game. On Saturday’s pre-game show we’ll talk to Kings forward Cody Esposito and get a closer look at defenceman Joel Kot; Keith Cassidy, Head Coach of the Saints, will also join us.

During the intermissions this weekend we’ll feature “The Quest for Junior ‘A’ supremacy”. Myself, along with Adam Bernardin and Adam Sargent, take a look across Canada and update you on all eleven leagues.

All-Star Weekend in Winkler!

January 21, 2010 Leave a comment

Tonight’s match-up between the Dauphin Kings and Wolverines just got a little more intriguing.

The Kings still lead the Sherwood Division and the entire league with their 39-8-1-0 record (18-7-0-0 on the road) while the Wolverines are well out of the playoff picture with a record of 14-32-0-1 (11-9-0-1 at home). The Wolverines beat the Kings at the Recreation Complex 4-1 on Tuesday night for their fifth straight win on home ice. Should Kings fans be worried? Probably not.

The Wolverines swept the Selkirk Steelers this past weekend as well and are just trying to finish out the rest of their schedule strong. Should Dauphin come back with a strong performance tonight and play aggressive they should come out with the result they want before the All-Star Break.

If the Kings are going to win tonight they’ll have to do it with a smaller line-up. Four players will miss tonight’s game due to injuries (F Angus Klassen, F Cody Esposito, F Zeanan Ziemer and D Dallas Drysdale). Brett Willows will start between the pipes for Dauphin; his last game was a 5-4 win over the Portage Terriers on January 12th.

Some other notes to consider for tonight’s game…

- The Wolverines are 4-3 in 2010 while the Kings have a record of 3-3.

- Kings Ryan Dreger has a ten game point streak heading into tonight’s contest. He has seven goals and eighteen points during the stretch.

Game time will be 7:30pm.

===========================

After tonight’s game the Dauphin Kings will be well-represented at the All-Star weekend in Winkler. Friday night at 7:30 will be the Prospects game which will include defencemen Dallas Drysdale and Mathew Backhouse.

On Saturday afternoon, the best players within the MJHL will hit the ice for the skills competition at 2:00 followed by the game itself at 7:30. Marlin Murray and his staff will coach the Sherwood Division stars. The Kings will have seven players in the game including goaltender Joe Caligiuri, defencemen Steven Shamanski and Mike Boese as well as forwards Bryce Lamb, Shane Luke, Ryan Dreger and Zeanan Ziemer.

Good Luck this weekend to the Kings All-Stars!

============================

The Westman High School Hockey League have their All-Star event planned for Saturday at the Yellowhead Arena in Neepawa. The skills competition will be at 1:00 followed by the game itself at 2:30. Representing the DRCSS Clippers will be forwards Kyle Trudeau and Trevor Fox

Kings and Terriers on CKDM!

January 12, 2010 Leave a comment

Regardless of the fact that the Dauphin Kings have lost two of three to start 2010, they have a chance tonight to pull off a season series sweep against the Portage Terriers at the Centennial Arena.

The Kings have outscored the Terriers 15-9 in the three games at Portage so far, but both teams will look a little different after the trading deadline. Here were the additions for both teams at the deadline…

DAUPHIN KINGS

F Dale Hunt [1990] (EVERETT WHL) 35 games 1g, 2a, 3pts

D Joel Kot [1990] (RED DEER WHL) 64 games 2g, 8a, 10pts (2008/2009)

MJHL List rights of...

F Derek Falloon [1993] (PARKLAND MBAAA) 29 games 13g, 12a, 25pts

D David Heath [1994] (SOUTHWEST MBAAA) 15 games 2a

PORTAGE TERRIERS

F Graham Dyck [1989] (MIRAMICHI MJAHL) 29 games 2g, 3a, 5pts

D Justin Perreaux [1989] (KINDERSLEY SJHL) 30 games 9a

F Mike Yovanic [1989] (PLYMOUTH OHL) Stats not available

Some other notes to consider for tonight’s match-up…

- Terriers forward Ian Campbell has a 12 game point streak (7g, 7a, 14pts)

- Kings forward Ryan Dreger has 10 assists in his last six games

- Dale Hunt will make his Kings debut in tonight’s game and will wear sweater number 39; Joel Kot will not dress tonight but will wear number 7. The other scratches for the Kings tonight are Tyler Gaudry and Zeanan Ziemer. Brett Willows will make his first start since January 2nd when he gave up six goals on 28 shots in a 6-1 loss to Swan Valley.

- Dauphin has won all six games against Portage this season (29GF, 14GA)

Mitchell and I will be on the air at 7:15 with the pre-game show. We’ll talk to Mitch Czibere, Patrick Kozyra and Dale Hunt of the Dauphin Kings as well as Blake Spiller (Head Coach/GM of the Portage Terriers).

=======================

The DRCSS Clippers are back home after finishing the Tournament of Champions with a 0-3 record. The Crocus Plains Plainsmen will face off with the Clippers at 7:00.

Kings continue to tweak in 2010

January 5, 2010 Leave a comment

I had a terrific holiday, went out to Kamloops BC and had a great time driving back to Dauphin through Alberta and Saskatchewan. I hope you had a great holiday as well and for those who celebrate Christmas according to the Julian Calendar, Kristos Razdayetsya!

It’s hard to believe the Manitoba Junior Hockey League’s trading deadline is only five days away (January 10th). The Dauphin Kings have brought in another piece to the puzzle as Devin Mitzner makes his first appearance at Credit Union Place.

Mitzner had an assist in his debut Saturday in a 6-1 loss to the Swan Valley Stampeders. The Strathmore Alberta product had 21 goals and 35 points in 50 games last year with the Flin Flon Bombers. Mitzner will wear sweater number 16.

If the Kings are going to extend their Credit Union Place winning streak to 20 games they’ll have to do it without Zeanan Ziemer and Mitch Czibere. Both players are battling injuries. Joe Caligiuri will start between the pipes for the Kings.

This will be the final meeting between these two teams in Dauphin during the regular season. The Kings have three wins thus far outscoring the Wolverines 21-6. The final three games will come in Waywayseecappo on January 19th, 21st and February 15th.

What do you think the Kings need to acquire at the trade deadline? Let me know!

=============================

The DRCSS Clippers are off to Winnipeg this week for the John Taylor Piper Classic Tournament of Champions. They’re situated in Pool B with the St. Pauls Crusaders and the Miles MacDonell Buckeyes. They play Thursday at 4:00 against St. Pauls as well as 8:00 against the Buckeyes.
