Dauphin Kings @ Swan Valley Stampeders November 13

DAUPHIN KINGS (12-11-2-0) 26 Points 5th in the Sherwood Division

SWAN VALLEY STAMPEDERS (15-8-2-0) 32 Points 1st in the Sherwood Division

The Dauphin Kings, fresh off their 8-2 drubbing of the Swan Valley Stampeders last night, will look to keep the offence coming tonight in Swan River. Fourteen different Kings had a least a point in the win, which is their second straight at Credit Union Place. I mentioned on the recap this morning that this could be classified as a statement game for the Dauphin Kings; this is based on the fact that they were able to get goal scoring from the secondary figures and not rely heavily on the line of Shane Luke, Chris Daniels and Bryn Chyzyk. It’s also based on the fact that this club has 13 goals in their last 2 games heading into tonight’s tilt with the Stampeders.

Forward Jeremy Peeke snapped a nineteen game goal-less drought with his third of the campaign; Derek Falloon was able to score for the first time in twelve games. Jeff Archibald, Josh Daley and Dayton Shaw were able to get out of modest goal scoring skids (Archibald 5 games, Daley and Shaw 3 each).

Although he face 37 shots, it was an easier evening for Brett Willows between the pipes. There were a number of challenging opportunities that he had to come up big on but he was able to see a lot of the shots that he faced. Willows gave credit to his team for eliminating the traffic and also hinted that he could be the starter in the rematch. ”Yeah certainly, whenever I can see the puck I’m fairly confident that I’m going to be able to stop it” says Willows. ”I think it was a bit of an off night for them (Swan Valley) and going back to their rink tomorrow, they’re known for getting traffic in front and jamming the pack to the hard areas so I’ll be ready for that tomorrow”.

This game was certainly in the Kings favour heading into the third period as Dauphin held a 4-2 lead and a 33-24 advantage on the shot clock but with four goals in a span of 2:13 that sealed the win for the Kings… it was all started by Dayton Shaw at 4:03 of the third period and continued with Josh Daley at 4:58; that was followed by Chris Daniels at 5:12 and wrapped up with Jeremy Peeke’s goal at 6:16 of the final period. With 48 saves on 56 shots, Dylan Wells still had pretty good numbers despite the eight goals against. The goaltender should not get the blame for this one; full credit to the Kings who were able to get the offence going and take advantage of Stampeder defensive miscues for the victory.

Looking at the numbers further, the season series may still be in favour of the Stampeders four wins to one but the Kings have evened up the goal scoring 15-15. Brett Willows saw his goals against average drop from 3.03 to 2.82 and his save percentage increased from 901 to 911; on the other hand Dylan Wells had a 1.00 goals against average and a 975 save percentage entering Friday’s contest… after the fact his goals against average is 3.33 and the save percentage, a respectable 926. The offensive support for Brett Willows also went up from 2.95 to 3.21.

The Kings roll into the Centennial Arena this evening, a place that has seen two Stampeder wins this regular season with Swan Valley outscoring Dauphin 7-4. Marlin Murray’s team has a record of 3-2 during November and look to keep pace with the fourth place OCN Blizzard with a victory this evening. Swan Valley, who lost for the first time in regulation this month on Friday, have the Portage Terriers just two points back of them for top spot in the Sherwood Division.

When discussing the Kings lineup for tonight’s game, forward Calvin Cairns will serve the final game in his current suspension and is eligible to return next Friday night against the OCN Blizzard. Forward Mitch Van Teeling is out in Penticton for the World Junior ‘A’ Challenge and will be back in the line-up next weekend in The Pas. Defenceman Matt McAleenan is out with the broken ankle while Matt Backhouse is questionable with an upper body injury.
