Swan Valley Stampeders @ Dauphin Kings November 12th
SWAN VALLEY STAMPEDERS (15-7-2-0) 32 Points 1st in the Sherwood Division
DAUPHIN KINGS (11-11-2-0) 24 Points 5th in the Sherwood Division
The Dauphin Kings continue an important ten game stretch against the Sherwood Division tonight against the Swan Valley Stampeders.
This is the opener of another weekend home and home series between these Parkland rivals. The last set went in favour of Swan Valley (Oct 29th 4-2 Stampeders in Dauphin; Oct 30th 4-3 Stampeders in Swan River).
Getting back to the importance of this ten game period, the Kings coaching staff has referred to this stretch as their season. How Dauphin fares overall could impact their positioning in the standings. With the fact that the Sherwood Division is separated by twelve points and five clubs have a 500 or better record, the Kings are still in the thick of it but finishing this ten game series with a sub 500 record will put them further behind the eight ball. So far the club has just two wins in six games.
Looking at the Sherwood Division the 11-11-2-0 Dauphin Kings come into the home and home with Swan Valley sitting just three points back of the OCN Blizzard for fourth spot. The Stampeders own a 15-7-2-0 mark and are two points up on the second place Portage Terriers (14-5-2-0).
Marlin Murray’s crew has an even 2-2 record during the month of November while Dwayne Kirkup’s team is still undefeated in regulation this month (2-0-1-0).
The Stampeders have had the Kings number so far with four wins head to head and 13 goals for compared to 7 goals against.
Meanwhile forward Angus Klassen has been shut down for the year after sustaining a concussion earlier in the season. Klassen met with the Kings coaching staff on Wednesday to discuss his future in Junior A hockey. After several meetings, and professional advice the decision was made to put a close on the 2010/2011 season for the Rosenfeld forward. Klassen, who is in his twenty-year-old season, dressed in six games and recorded four goals. Kings Head Coach and General Manager Marlin Murray said about the Klassen situation…
“It’s a real big loss for our hockey club. Angus means a lot to our organization. He is looked up to by the young players and is a real good role model. I don’t think the public understands the importance that Angus has inside our dressing room. After seven weeks of rest, testing and getting professional advice everyone is in agreement that Angus has to look after his personal health. He is a very smart person in the classroom and should have a bright career away from the hockey world. To come back, put his health in jeopardy and receive another concussion would be awful. Angus is making the right decision and we respect it fully. The Dauphin Kings would like to thank Angus for his strong work ethic, excellent leadership skills and friendly demeanor while wearing Kings colors! We wish him all the best in the future.”
The Kings also acquired forward Luke Hannas from the BCHL’s Prince George Spruce Kings in exchange for future considerations. Hannas, from Williams Lake British Columbia, played twelve games with the Spruce Kings this season and had eight penalty minutes.
Dauphin will also be without defenceman Matt McAleenan (ankle) for tonight’s match-up versus the Swan Valley Stampeders; forward Calvin Cairns serves the second of his three game suspension while forward Mitch Van Teeling is out in Penticton for the World Junior ‘A’ Challenge.
